Long live the new flesh: Fans of David Cronenberg's ahead-of-its-time 1983 sci-fi extravaganza Videodrome, about a radical vision of mankind's future relationship with our television sets, should rejoice. The Criterion Collection is giving the cult classic the Rolls-Royce treatment, complete with a fresh transfer of the unrated ''director's cut'' of the film, commentary tracks by Cronenberg, James Woods and Deborah Harry, a new documentary about the movie's groundbreaking special effects, and loads of other goodies.

Awesome! Thought I must say I'm more excited about the Criterion release of Naked Lunch on DVD, mostly because its the first and long overdue release of Naked Lunch on DVD, at least in the US. Videodrome has been out on DVD a while, but its great that they've given it a makeover for the Criterion Collection. I guess they've also done Dead Ringers for Criterion. Good to see most of Cronenburg's stuff being transferred to DVD, for years I kept renting VHS copies to find them in worse and worse shape and was afraid it was going to get damn near impossible to find decent copies of his classic work.

yeah, i picked up the naked lunch disc when they first released it... it's reaaaallly good, nice extras, excellent transfer. same with the dead ringers, I love the criterion treatment. They definitely do it right. -

Too bad the Dead Ringers is out of print and usually runs about $50 on ebay, half.com, amazon marketplace, even Netflix doesn't have a copy, I have been itching to see it and last time I rented the VHS was screwed up. I'm gonna pick up the Naked Lunch soon, and probably Videodrome a bit after, and keep hunting for an affordable copy of Dead Ringers.

just received my copy of the criterion disc!! haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but even the case is amazing... designed to look like a betamax videotape, complete with handwritten sticky label title! here's a photo:

now if I can just find a way... to ... insert it... into... my chest... [shlupp!]

Hey I'm gonna revive this thread since I just finally rented the DVD.
Pretty cool! Looked gorgeous.
The short film "Camera" was my fave extra - way creepy!!!
The docs were OK. Cron's commentary was nice. James Woods was irritating and Debbie Harry didn't have enough to say. Seeing the full-length Samurai Dream was interesting ... but I was bummed not to see the deleted scenes mentioned in the booklet and shown in the stills! -

I just got this from amazon yesterday! I only had time to watch the totally laughable "round table discussion". Man, the interviewer was awful! those questions were rotten, and he seemed to be reading from a list rather than *listening* to the panel's discussion. STILL, the three directors gave pretty good answers, and Landis (not my favorite director at all) tried really hard to keep a real interactive discussion going (to no avail).
Landis, despite his crappy films, is quite fun to listen to! the guy is a hardcore nerd in the best sense.
Much looking forward to properly watching the film tonight. -

Yeah didn't that roundtable look like something off Civic TV?!
I'm no Landis fan, either, but the 3 of them were pretty comic - brainy Cron, gruff Carpenter, geeky Landis. I love when Cron shoots them down about "that's real censorship"
Let us know what you think of the rest of the discs...
See ya in Pittsburgh!
