For me MOST of his films deal with the notion that we as a society should ALL be very 'careful what we wish for' as our scientific developments and creations WILL inevitably turn against us someday: think tvs, videogames, hyper-drugs, genetic engineering etc.

Re: Cronemberg themes
Thu, November 13, 2003 - 9:31 AMI agree Syd, but I think one of his strongest themes is the inherent horror of our own bodies. That sounds a bit drastic, but the gist is that no matter how comfortable you are under your own skin, there are unimaginable machinations stirring within. The fear of loss, dismemberment, cancer, sickness; it is all a great unknown, encapsulated in that organ of flesh which is the most intimate environment we have for our selves. And ironically, this great unknown is also that through which we channel our most basic connections, our sexuality and identity. I don't think the point is to promote this fear, but to control it through familiarity.
or not. -

Re: Cronemberg themes
Thu, November 13, 2003 - 10:51 AMYeah. I think the "body horror" thing is the key element with his work. Kind of a peripheral theme (or perhaps it's DC's way of *getting to* the body horror) might be the influence of the technological on the biological. And, for the most part, I think Cronenberg reserves judgement on that.
A lot of SF/Horror comes off as ludite. "That's what you get for *playing God!*" I really don't see that in DC's work at all. -

Mon, November 17, 2003 - 6:42 AM" you think you woke me up about the flesh, don't you? but you only know society's straight line about the flesh. you can't get past society's SICK GRAVE FEAR of the flesh!
drink deep! or taste not, the plasma spring.
...and i'm not just talking about sex, and penetration, I'm talking about a deep penetrating drive, beyond the veil of the flesh, a deep penetrating dive, into the plasma pool! "
seth brundle, in the fly.
delivered in perfect goldblum cadence, of course...lol

Re: Cronemberg themes
Fri, November 14, 2003 - 9:00 PMIn his films I also sense his personal experiences, primal ideas, dreams and interrogations made during his upbringing, why do I think / sense this? A lot of the imagery he uses reminds me of night terrors and children’s nightmares… -
